Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris born October 20 1964) is an American politician and lawyer who is currently the 49th vice-president of the United States. Harris is the first female vice president and highest-ranking female official of U.S. History, as well the first African American and second Asian American vice president. As a member of the Democratic Party, she previously was the attorney general for California from 2011 until 2017 and as a United States senator representing California from 2017 to 2021. Harris was born and raised in Oakland, California. Harris started her career in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. She was then recruited to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. The office was named San Francisco district attorney in 2003. Harris was elected Attorney General of California in 2010, and then she was re-elected in 2014. Harris served as the junior United States Senator from California between 2017 to 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Sanchez to become the second African American woman senator and the first South Asian American ever to be elected to the United States Senate. As a senator , she supported healthcare reform, federal descheduling of cannabis, a path for immigrants who are not legal citizens and the DREAM Act and a ban on assault weapons. She also supported progressive tax reform. She was well-known for the direct questioning she conducted of Trump government officials in Senate hearings.
